NcStar bayonet mount?

Post by Chief Brody »

Purely for kicks, I'd love to be able to add a bayonet to my 870P. The original style mounts only allow for a bead sight and aren't too easy to come by. S&J's version looks great, includes a barrel clamp, allows for any sights you might have, but it's just too expensive for me. I did find another option from NcStar.

I can't find any information on where it's made but the low price of $10-20 makes me assume it's from overseas. Anybody have experience with this part? Is it a quality piece? This whole idea is entirely unnecessary, just for fun. So, maybe prohibitively expensive, maybe not. What say you?

Interesting, I've never seen that bayonet mount before, and I've spent time looking.

A red flag for me is that it's aluminum, and assuming that that low price isn't getting you a good strong alloy, I wouldn't expect the lug to hold up real well to actual fighting use. Of course, it doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for anyway. A rear bayonet lug isn't complicated, and it doesn't even have to be all that dimensionally precise in order to work. For under $20, I'd say it's worth a try if all you want to do is click a bayonet on occasionally just for giggles. I give it points for having a sling stud too, something the S&J doesn't. I'm actually tempted to pick one up to try out myself.

I like that the Picatinny sections are removable. I don't think I'd leave this thing on full time, so I can forgive that lack of a barrel clamp. Yeah, I think I'll go for it sometime soon - still need to source the knife, though!

My OKC M9 came from Ebay. It was a gift, but I think it was in the $80 range for the knife & sheath. That's a proper military knife though, you can get commercial M16-compatable bayonets for less.

So I found one of these for a really good price somewhere online, and went ahead and pulled the trigger on it. It arrived today, and I've been playing around with it on my extensions.

Overall, it seems to be a decent piece - especially for the money. The optional rail pieces are nice, and the lug is machined so that the bayonet can simply be slid on and it will click itself into place. My S&J Hardware bayonet mount requires that I pinch the knife's locking tabs to get it on.

However, one big issue with this piece is that it's much longer than the S&J, so the point where the knife attaches is farther forward. On an S&J Hardware +2 extension, the bayonet's mounting ring can't even reach the end of the extension, and on the Remington +2, it'll only slip on part-way even with the mount pushed right up against the coupling nut. It's on there enough to get the job done, but the knife will rattle around something fierce. There's no issue with the Remington +3, and I would expect the S&J +3 would have enough room as well.

I haven't shot with it yet, so I'm waiting to see how that goes. But I probably wouldn't recommend this with any +2 extension, unless the bayonet is only going to be there for show (and even then, the rattle is pretty annoying). For the money though, this could be a nice way to get a couple side accessory rails on your gun for cheap.

Thanks for the info, synchro. Maybe I'll hold off for now. You didn't take any pictures by any chance, did you?

Not yet, but I'll be setting up my cameras today or tomorrow to shoot my next video, so I can take some pictures then.

Alright, here are some pictures of my M9 bayonet mounted to various mag extensions with the NcStar mount:

With the Remington +2, the knife can't get all the way onto the extension's end cap. It's not going to be falling off or anything, but it does rattle around quite a bit, and if you're actually going around stabbing things, the aluminum rear lug is going to be taking all the force.

The Remington +3 has enough space for the bayonet to get all the way on.

With the S&J Hardware +2, the knife can't even reach the end of the extension. I suspect the S&J +3 would be long enough, but I don't have one to confirm.

Awesome, thanks for the thorough picture-taking. I do have a Remington +3 that I've actually never installed. Waiting for the right time to have a VR barrel cut down to match with that extension. Maybe I'll look back into the bayonet lug when I have that project underway. Thanks again.
