Hi Rem870 - Greetings from Toronto

Post by DieseLSmack »

Hi Rem870 Forums

I'm a brand new owner of an 870 Express. First time gun owner and only recently began shooting before getting my license.

I just have a few questions. I know the Rem 870 Express can rust quite easily, what are some of the must have products to prevent rust and generally maintain the gun? I'm going to pick up a bottle of Remoil tonight at Bass Pro but I would like to shop around for some good cleaning kits as well. I've done some research online but generally everyone says something different. We do live in a very moist climate.

Thanks guys!

I have an Express-finished gun. I just oil it occasionally, especially if it's gotten wet or been out in the cold for awhile, and I don't have any rust issues (except for one time when I really neglected it) - and that's with a finish that's worn completely off in a number of areas. I really like the individually-packaged Rem Oil wipes, they're great to keep in a pocket or glovebox for wiping some oil on before bringing a gun in out of the cold.

As for a cleaning kit, you don't need anything too fancy. A basic Hoppe's shotgun kit gets you most of the way there. To that, you can just add whatever other odds & ends you find you need, things like Q-tips, a 12ga swab, or a stiff toothbrush for getting into the action bar slots & bolt. There are fancier cleaning kits out there if you prefer, but an 870 really isn't hard to clean, and it doesn't need to be spotless to run reliably either.

You are going to get a lot of mixed opinions about gun cleaning tools & products, and gun lubes. Everyone's got their favorite brands or techniques, and for some guns, there are better & worse products. For the 870 though, it's pretty tough to go wrong, so I wouldn't over-think it.
