HD barrel for Remington 870 WM SuperMag

Post by Photogg4eva »

I think I might need a little help here. I just got off the phone with the Remington Parts & Service. Remington stated they don't make a HD length barrel (of any type) for the Wingmaster Supermag. Nothing in the way of 18.5", anyway. Their suggestion would be to buy a 24, 26 or 28" barrel and have a certified gunsmith cut it down. So I'm asking for advice from y'all on where to get a 18.5 - 20" barrel for a Remington 870 12ga Supermag, possibly with a RemCkoke. What would be the least expensive way of doing this — trying to find one and purchasing it or going the way of cutting one down? I'll be curious to hear the different answers I might get.

I've never heard of a 18.5" to 20" barrel for a wingmaster

It's my understanding all 870 barrels are interchangeable so pick the finish, length etc. and install it.

I'd skip the gunsmith route due to cost.

If you are wanting 3-1/2" shell chamber too I'd forget about that it's not practical or needed and recoil is brutal.

Like BurstBarrel said, all standard 12ga barrels are interchangeable, regardless of chamber length. You'll just need to stick to shells that both the receiver and barrel can safely accept. Your SuperMag receiver can handle any 12ga shells short of a few oddballs and wildcats, so if you get a barrel with a 2 3/4 or 3" chamber, that'll be the limiting factor. 3 1/2" 12ga buckshot loads are only good for hunting anyway - and some would argue they're even overkill for that.

Just about all combat-oriented 870 barrels these days are made for Remington's Express or Police model lines. An 870's an 870, so they'll fit your Wingmaster, but the finish may not match. Some Police 870s are offered with Wingmaster-style polished bluing, so those would be the best bet if you care about looks. A Wingmaster slug-hunting barrel would also do pretty well on a fighting shotgun, but they're usually more in the 20" range, and you'll want to avoid those with fully-rifled barrels, as they won't pattern shot loads well at all.

If you're not worried about matching finishes (and really, if a junkie is breaking down your door in the middle of the night, who's going to care?), a simple fixed-choke Express Tactical barrel will do everything you need for a good price. Used barrels are available for even cheaper. The one thing to be aware of with short Express barrels is that some are intended for the special models with longer base magazine tubes. These barrels won't work on your receiver; look for barrels meant for standard receivers.

Both Police and Express barrels are available threaded for Rem Chokes, and you can also have any fixed-choke barrel threaded for choke tubes, if you desire. But that'll cost extra, and the barrel will be less durable and require more maintenance. Fixed chokes have a lot of advantages on a fighting shotgun, especially at close ranges where the choke doesn't change much anyway.

Thank you for all the informative notes and advise Synchronizor. There's a huge local gun show here next weekend and it will give me more than enough opportunity to find what I need to finish my modification. I can't wait. I waited more a few months to find the right WM , so I can certainly wait on getting the right barrel when I find it.
