Like Chief Brody said, shoot the gun. A lot. Cycling it at home also moves the parts around and can help wear rough spots down.

Also, overly-heavy springs can stiffen up an 870 by increasing friction in the system. It's not a huge difference, but on a gun that's otherwise run-in, it's noticeable.

Cleaning? Sure, keep dirt and grit out of your receiver, and things'll move easier. As for polishing, plenty of folks have taken a buffing wheel to their action bars and other moving parts, but I really think the best way to go is to just let the gun break itself in through normal use. That'll wear down any rough spots that are actually dragging on each other, while not stripping the finish or surface hardening off anything that isn't interfering.
