870 with 18.5" barrel for HD. IC or Mod choke?

Post by Mifune326 » Mon Mar 05, 2012 5:14 am

Greetings everyone!

I'm planning on purchasing an 870 Police with a 18.5" barrel for HD. Remington offers this shotgun with either an IC or a Mod choke. I plan on loading it primarily with 00 Buck but want the option of shooting slugs through it when necessary.

I like the idea of the Mod choke for tighter groups with 00 Buck but am not sure how the slugs will perform through this choke. Can anyone shed any light?

Also, I'm kind of leaning toward the express sights vs. the ghost rings as I like the fact your head can stay lower on the gun and your target seems less obscured. But do the ghost offer a better sight picture for longer range slug shots?

Thanks!

Your slugs will perform no difference wether it's in a modified or improved cylinder. Along as they have "rifling" on the so the lead can swag through the choke. I just prefer ic over modified and open over ic. The sights come down to your personal tastes more towards ghost ring or rifle sights.

I had an older 870 that shot slugs like a rifle through an IC choke. 870's have the tightest bore of just about any 12 guage and some companies recommend IC only for slugs. You can offset the constriction by getting 00 buck with a buffered wad. A little searching ought to find you some tight shooting buckshot.

Excellent, thank you fellas. I ended up going with the IC and as you said, it throws out a pretty darn nice pattern with standard Federal 00 Buck as it is. I'm gonna put some Federal "Flight Control" LE127 00 through it and see how it likes it.

So far I'm thrilled with my 870. And I'm really liking the low profile rifle (express) sights!

I have the fixed IC choke on my 870 too, I think it's a universal choke which suits most shooters.

The best one is the one that performs best. Shoot each one and see which pattern/group you like the best. Choke tubes are cheap. Try a couple with yout loads and see how they perform.

So I just realized i did a typo.... Cylinder was suppose to be ghost ring... don't ask my how I did that.. I was probably thinking about Cylinder bore... Which I would want more than any choke.
