factor in the interwebs and youtube and you can find people popping off things that would normally seem illegal (in the US) or may as well be sawed-offs.

Simply asking "What's the deal?" is pretty broad. We can help if you have specific questions, but if you simply have no idea how short-barreled shotguns are regulated under U.S. federal law, I would recommend doing some reading to learn the basics first. The Wikipedia pages on the National Firearms Act and Title II Weapons are good starting points; and the ATF's website has a decent FAQ regarding short-barreled rifles & shotguns that covers some of the finer legal points of owning such firearms.

They are legal to own in some states under certain conditions. I have three legal SBS one AOW and two SBR.
