New Owner: Question about Remington owners manual - Oil type

Hi,

awesome that we have a dedicated forum for 870 owners available on the internet!

i just purchased my first shotgun. a Tactical express 870. and i'm enjoying being a new shot gun owner.

I like it so far, but it looks to be a bit under oiled from the factory and as a result my magazine tube is kinda getting scratched up.

Well, to remedy the situation, I went ahead and used some Hoppes lubricating oil on the exterior of the rifle and the trigger group etc. - the usual oiling that i've learned to do on firearms. including the area under the pump/magazine tube etc.

i thought all was good until i read the owners manual and researched online.



Apparently, according to the owners manual; Remington doesn't want anyone using anything other than rem oil on their shotguns and they claim that if the rem oil is not used - damage to the fire arm will possibly result.

I've researched this online for an hour now, and this actually does have a lot of people paranoid and even people that hate remoil are using it as a response to fear.

Is there any validity to this? i couldnt finda single answer online so i thought i would make this thread so no one else would find themselves in the problem i'm finding myself in now.

should i strip the hoppes oil off with gun cleaner and apply a coat of rem oil instead?

the owners manual really seems to hate on any oil other than rem oil, atleast from my reading.

I would hate to cause damage to my new shot gun.

is it really not recommended to use all the other awesome lubricants out there? i've been a hoppes fan , as well as winchester, clp and some other off brand stuff i found works really well.

from what i could find online, rem oil is diffrent than the other oils in that its thinner and teflon. are these ingredients absolutly necessary for the proper reliability and longevity of this fire arm?

any quality oil will work fine.

The owner's manual keeps recommending Rem Oil because it's Remington's product. If you like some other lube better, go ahead and use it.
