Barrel Safety

I just spoke to Remington Customer Service about a replacement barrel. The 20" barrel I purchased has stamped on the side 2.75" & 3" but the packaging says 2.75", 3", & 3.5" shells with SuperMag receiver. I was told by a well informed person that I should only go by whats on the barrel but Remington says the packaging is correct and the barrel will allow for 3.5" shells. Any one have any experience with shooting 3.5" shells through a 20" barrel? Any help would be appreciated before I take the barrel back.
