Anybody use non-lethal shotgun rounds for HD?
Anybody use non-lethal shotgun rounds for HD?
My wife and I have been talking lately, and I am going to be making my old Remington 870 20 gauge a home defense gun. We don't have anything for home defense now, and live in an apartment building. I have been reading about the use of buck shot can go through walls and hit neighbors, which is a hazard, and bird shot does damage, but not enough to put down. I started looking into some non lethal solutions as well. I found a sight that makes anything from rubber slugs to rubber buck shot, to pepper spray w/ rubber pellets as well. What are your thoughts on these non lethal rounds? I personally think I would load my gun with a couple of non lethals, and if that doesn't work... resort to a #4 shot around shot number three....

Birdshot is lethal enough to kill no question about that. I would not go with #6 but a heavy field load or magnums of #2s is what I use for protection against humans. A shot to the face with fine birdshot will blind and stop an attacker. The distance you will be using in an apartment setting is measured in feet not yards, so birdshot is definitely viable option, without the worry of over penetration.
The other thing is non-lethal is not something I want to use for protection. I want to stop the attack now. Not in 2 or 3 shots, or after a warning. When the gun goes off it will be pointed at center of mass of chest or head.

Effectiveness of non-lethal rounds is questionable. Also, imagine facing an armed burglar knowing that you have shotgun loaded with several non-lethal rounds.pizzadave wrote:My wife and I have been talking lately, and I am going to be making my old Remington 870 20 gauge a home defense gun. I wouldn't do it from a legal standpoint.

They are there to either harm you and your family, or take your things. Less than ammo? Kill the Mutha and apologize later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Anybody use non-lethal shotgun rounds for HD?
I have seen videos of less than lethal rounds being used and they did not impress me at all. In a HD or SD situation, I use with #1 or 00 buck rounds by Federal or Hornady TAP in 00 buck. Bird shot is a no go for HD.
Re: Anybody use non-lethal shotgun rounds for HD?
I just bought my HD 870 a few days ago and the employee at the gun shop told me he loads buck shot for HD but the first round is bird shot as a non-lethal warning.
He said that if the attacker keeps coming after the birdshot, its buckshot till they go down.
I figured that sounded like good advice.

If you're going to shoot someone IN YOUR HOUSE and IN SELF DEFENSE make sure you SHOOT TO KILL! Dead people don't talk. And if they fall outside the door, drag them back in and then hand the gun to your wife. She'll get off of any charges easier than you will. (courtesy of an unnamed state police officer) I can blow "warning" holes in my ceiling all night long! (I don't live in an apartment though)

I know this is my first post here but I find this to be the worst advice in the world (The part "Drag the body back in, and lie about who did the shooting) and would be very surprise to hear it from any law enforcement officer. You would most likely find yourself in a situation of trying to cover your lies with more lies at 3am in a police station interview room while you wife is in a separate room doing the same.Randomguns wrote:If you're going to shoot someone IN YOUR HOUSE and IN SELF DEFENSE make sure you SHOOT TO KILL! Moving the body, or rearranging any other physical evidence about what happened, is called "tampering with a crime scene." And it is itself a very serious crime. Tampering with evidence isn't just a criminal act. It is also an act which is very likely to be discovered. The science of forensics has advanced to the point where the investigators will definitely know that you have done something to the scene, and will probably know exactly what it was that you did. And the investigators will (very reasonably) assume that the reason you did it is because you outright murdered someone and were trying to hide evidence which shows that the shooting was a murder instead of an act of self-defense. If you are ever involved in a shooting, it is vitally important that you do not lie to the police. (If fact, you should not make any statement without an attorney.) Even one little lie, if caught, can destroy your credibility in court. Without that credibility, you will have a much harder time staying out of jail even if your actions were completely within the law.
