New to the group

Post by Black Dogs » Sun Apr 01, 2018 2:41 am

Hello from Minnesota.
After quite a bit of research I recently picked up a Remington 870 Tactical. Was interested in a duel purpose shotgun for HD/Turkey hunting. The Remington seemed to fit the bill for me ( removable choke tube for Turkey hunting).
While searching for HD upgrades, I stumbled across this site....I like it a lot.

Welcome aboard. Yup, the 870 can do it all.

Welcome to the forum. Which 870 model did you get?

I have the "Tactical" model.
Bought it used and it came with FDE Magpul stock and forearm.
Just had it Cerakoted the same color.

I guess what I'm asking is whether or not it has the special single-piece 6-round mag tube. If so, it'll limit your options for turkey hunting, since it doesn't take standard barrels. For any dual-purpose defense-hunting 870 setup, I recommend building on a model with a standard receiver.

Oh, sorry. The factory box that it came in says,
"18.5" RS BBL. Rem Choke Tactical Tube Ghost Ring w/2 Shot Extension".
Primarily I wanted a home defense gun.
Also was looking for something with a short barrel that would work well in a turkey blind and with interchangeable chokes (turkey). Duel purpose.
I know it's not the ideal "Turkey Gun", but my thought was it will work better than my 28" Benelli, in a turkey blind. I have killed turkeys with it from a blind, but the 28" barrel is not very suited for blind hunting.
Thank you for the information.
I do appreciate all of your knowledge and enjoy reading your posts in this forum.

Short barrel, interchangeable chokes, & ghost ring sights should make for a pretty good turkey gun. You can also put a red dot on the receiver rail if desired. If the gun doesn't already come with one, I would recommend getting a SuperCell pad for the stock. They're pre-fit for Remington factory polymer semi-grip and ShurShot stocks, but Magpul makes an adapter for their SGA stock to let it take the same pad. Not very expensive, and it makes those heavy turkey loads bearable. Helps with HD shells too.
