What you hunt with your 870?

Is a "tree rat" a opossum?
Don't do any hunting with the 870, but have killed a couple of zombies and my husband's target stand.
I think you could probably shoot quail with it, but haven't seen a quail around here since their population has dwindled.

Nice... Gotta be ready for those zombies!
Almost - down here in New Zealand the brushtail possum is a huge pest. Another introduced species who's population exploded and is having huge impact on native species.

LOL, thanks for your reply, Rich.
We call squirrels "tree rats." I didn't think it was a squirrel that you took a pic of at night and wondered what the critter was in the tree.

Re: What you hunt with your 870?
My 870 was the first gun I ever bought. Sense the decreasingly popular State of Illinois does not permit hunting with rifles I bought the rifled combo in 3" mag. I must say it was an Investment. I may have to buy a second because I can't bring myself to turn it into a home defender and leave myself with out a hunting gun. I am dead set on the Hornady SST sabot slugs. fast, flat and far every time. as for the bird barrel i use a variety of bird low-brass in 2-3/4 for squirrels and rabbit. and Federal BlackCloud 3" #2 high-brass for the ducks.

My wife picked up a 20 gauge and started knocking clay pigeons right out of the sky so I bought her the 870 20g 3" combo.

Buy an 18.5-inch barrel for it (and maybe a magazine extension), and you'll have a home defense build. My usual bedside 870 build doesn't have a lot of tactical bells and whistles, just a short barrel and a tube of buckshot.2131usmc wrote:I may have to buy a second because I can't bring myself to turn it into a home defender and leave myself with out a hunting gun.

Re: What you hunt with your 870?
New to forum, but long time Remington 870 Wingmaster shooter. I use the 16 gauge chamber from 1973. I usually hunt dove, quail, teal, cottontail rabbit, & squirrels with my 870. I have also taken 2 Whitetail Deer, 1 turkey, and a javelina with it. Mine has a Poly-choke that is very versatile. A couple of years ago I bought a new 16 gauge barrel that has screw in chokes. This barrel patterns great but is very stiff locking and unlocking into battery.
I recently bought a 12 gauge 870 Express but have only used it for a couple of dove hunts.
Look forward to reading what others experience with the 870 is like.

Re: What you hunt with your 870?
I love my 870, I believe it is one of the greatest shotguns out there for your hard earned cash. I have not done any hunting but have taken out many targets and water jugs. Here are some pics of some of the targets.
