Choate +2 Extension

Post by Tornado_Racing » Sun Mar 24, 2013 11:14 am

Hey Guys,

Did a simple search without definite answer, but how much of the spring needs to be cut off for the +2 extension. I'm taking my 28" 870 Express and building a 18.5" Tactical/HD gun.

Usually when you order a full extension kit, it will come with a new, longer magazine spring already at the proper length. You should be able to just drop it right in without any cutting.

Okay thanks for the reply. The new spring is twice as long as the stock spring and I've read where guys have cut the new spring. Just wasn't sure how much to cut off.

Watch the you tube video from brownells on adding an extension to your 870. He speaks in the length you would like your spring depending on extension size.

I watched a video from Brownell's that said to insert the spring into the magazine tube and trim it 12 - 14" from the end. When I installed my Chaote 2-shot extension, I think I ended up with 13" of spring remaining. And that's still a little tight getting that 6th round in there.

I started with the stock length spring and it was too long. I cut 3 inches off and was very tight trying to get the 6th shell in (2.75"). I went and cut another 3 inches off or now roughly the same length as the +2 extension and she's perfect. I ran a whole box (25rds) without a single issue and was cycling the gun very fast.

It will have to be carefully cut until you get the desired result and reliable function.
