Confused about chokes

Post by Tangthebay » Sat Nov 02, 2019 11:14 pm

I just bought a 2019 Remington 870 express 28 inch. I was told it has a modified choke. Is there any way to check that without taking the choke out? Also, can you use birdshot, buckshot and rifled slugs for it

None of my RemChokes have indicator notches, but if they did they'd look like the attached image. Modified is pretty standard as a middle-of-the-road choke. Of course, without notches, you'll have to pull the choke and see what is written on it. Modified is great for use with birdshot, okay to use for buckshot, and for slugs you "can" but it would be better to move to a more open choke like CYLINDER or IMPR.CYLINDER.
