My first Remington 870.

Post by Swedeman » Sat May 11, 2019 12:14 pm

I just bought a Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun. The receiver is stamped Remington 870 Express and on the left side of the receiver is serial number W880666M. The barrel says it can shoot 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells. The receiver does NOT say anything about being capable of 3 inch shells.
I would like to know when the shotgun was manufactured and anything else you could advise me about.
All information would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot,
Swedeman

Hi and welcome to the forum. Your870 Express has a magnum receiver capable of handling 3" shells.

The W prefix in the serial number indicates the gun was manufactured between 1984-1989.

The M suffix indicates 12 gauge magnum receiver.

Look for a 2 letter code stamped into the the left side of the barrel around the chamber area. A picture will help as there are often other letters stamped near the date code.

Enjoy your new 870!

OK, I have my 870 apart. On the left side of the barrel is printed " Use 2 3/4 or 3" in magnum receiver. Use only 2 3/4 in all others." Also on the left side of the barrel near are the markings ( looks like a square U followed by 63 ).
On the right side of the barrel are the standard Read the instructions etc. Markings near the receiver are, a horizontal H inside a triangle, down and to the right are the letters REP inside a circle, up and a little right is a horizontal R , and farther right is the letter T. That's all on the barrel.
The receiver has serial number W880666M and printed on the right side is Remington 870 Express ( no magnum designation ).
I appreciate the info, you have already given me. Are you absolutely sure this is a magnum receiver ??
Please advise,
Thanks a lot,
Swedeman

Sorry, the Remington 870 Express is printed on the Left side not the right side.
Sorry.

Definitely a magnum receiver.

The date code is located on the left side of the barrel near the receiver as in the pic below (sorry it's blurry).

The first letter of the date code is the month the barrel was manufactured. It will be one of the following: B L A C K P O W D E R X (Jan - Dec, i.e. B is Jan, X is Dec).

The second letter will be the year. From the prefix of the receiver, an original barrel would likely have the letter D E F G H or I (1983-1988). In the pic below the date code is the 2 letters in the middle of the group - PJ (June 1989 - in the pic it looks like P O, but it's actually P J).
