Wood stock finish

Hello, I have a question about a stock set that I bought on ebay a couple of years ago. First of all, I know very little about wooden gun stocks. I am thinking about putting the set on my 870 but am wondering if there is anything that I should put on them to help protect against wear and weather to some extent. I would rather maintain a somewhat original police stock appearance if possible. Any suggestions ? Also, the label indicates that the stock is for an 870 however the buttstock is stamped 11-87. Are they interchangeable ? Thanks.

I have same stock set on one of mine. Its police stock set. Should have some kind of finish already, but if you wanted to give it another dose you might apply a VERY LIGHT coat of real tung oil, or "tung oil finish" which is a product of mysterious composition that approximates genuine tung oil. Get the product with low gloss finish unless you like shiny. If it gets banged up you can clean it up and apply another coat.

Another option, and one that I think I prefer more, would be to apply a very light coat of boiled linseed oil. Im talking VERY light. Go heavy and youll make a sticky mess.

Just put very light BLO on my stock, which was new like yours. First I wiped with alcohol to remove any oils or grease.
