Can slugs be fired through a smoothbore barrel? I own the youth model.

Best to check your bore end, most are choked in some fashion. The 870 Youth I just purchased was fitted with a Modified screw-in Remchoke. For slugs, a Cylinder or Improved Cylinder choke is best.

Pretty much any slug shells can be used in a smoothbore barrel, so long as you don't have too tight of a choke. Some shotgun slugs are intended for use in special rifled barrels, though. You can use them without any problems in a smoothbore barrel, but they won't be very accurate.
