870 Receiver Marking Question

Post by texasjarhead » Wed Nov 07, 2018 8:04 pm

Hello All- While test-firing my 870 12 gauge HD shotgun the other day, I noticed the receiver marking. It says: "Remington 870". It doesn't have the words "Express" on the receiver, even though it's a "Synthetic Express" model I bought in the late 1990's. I never noticed that before, and wonder if this is unusual? I guess I thought all the "Express" models had that word on the receiver. Any info on this is appreciated. I really like this shotgun, and want to learn as much as I can about it.

Okay- I think I figured this out. My 870 is the "Synthetic Express HD" model, HD being Home Defense. In addition to saying only "Remington 870" on the receiver, the magazine tube DOES NOT have the dimples in it. So, I guess the HD models eliminated the word "Express" on the receiver. It never ceases to amaze me as to just how many 870 variations there are out there!!!!

Why type of finish does the steel have?

Mine has the matte blue / powdercoat finish. By the way, this finish has held up extremely well over the past 20 years.

There have been many variations of the 870 over the years. Remington introduced the express line in 1987 with the matte finish. Glad to hear that the finish has held up well. Post some pictures if you can we all would like to see all 870s

Here it is. I am a firm believer in KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Only 3 modifications to this 870 Express HD: I shortened the stock to fit; added a Supercell butt pad, as per suggestion from Synchronizer; added a good quality flashlight.
