Serial number confusion

Learn something new everyday...the Remington Support guy told me that some of the early models didn't have them....or maybe I got the 870 mixed up with another firearm (it happens).

I know that a lot of very old Remingtons didn't have any serial number... but not heard about an 870 without. The very early 870's didn't have a year code in their serial numbers.... My 1954 has none. Remington are pretty good about getting the info for you though!
